Medicare Basics

The Foundation: Original Medicare

The two parts that form the foundation of Original Medicare.

Part A

Hospital Insurance

Part A generally helps cover eligible inpatient hospital care and certain other Medicare-covered services.

Part B

Medical Insurance

Part B generally helps cover eligible physician services, outpatient care, preventive services, and certain other Medicare-covered medical services.

Specific deductibles, premiums, and cost figures change over time. Ike can help you understand current details during your personal review.

Your Coverage Decisions

What Happens After Parts A & B?

Most people follow one of two common coverage pathways.

Original Medicare Path

  • Original Medicare
  • Medicare Supplement where appropriate
  • Part D prescription drug coverage where appropriate

Medicare Advantage Path

A Medicare Advantage plan that provides Medicare-covered Part A and Part B services and may include prescription drug coverage or other benefits depending on the specific plan.

Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement (Medigap) are different ways to receive Medicare coverage and are generally not used together. Neither path is automatically better than the other — it depends on your individual situation.

Timing Matters

Still Working or Covered Through an Employer?

If you or your spouse are still working and you have employer-sponsored health coverage, your Medicare enrollment decisions may depend on the type of coverage you have and the size and status of the employer. Do not assume that everyone should enroll in the same parts of Medicare at age 65.

Individualized enrollment advice depends on your specific circumstances. Before making changes, it helps to review your employer coverage details with someone who understands how it interacts with Medicare.

Don't Overlook It

Don't Forget Prescription Drug Coverage

Prescription drug coverage can be provided through a standalone Medicare drug plan or through certain Medicare Advantage plans that include drug coverage.

Going without Medicare drug coverage or other creditable prescription coverage for the applicable period may result in a late-enrollment penalty unless an exception applies.
